The Croatian island of Pašman lies in the Zadar archipelago, between the mainland near Biograd na Moru and the neighboring island of Ugljan. It is easy to reach, yet feels noticeably calmer than many of the well-known spots along the coast. Small harbors, simple bathing spots, olive groves, and waterside villages define the landscape.
Pašman can be reached both via a bridge at Ždrelac and by ferry. This keeps the journey simple, while the island still retains its calm, relaxed character. The villages are located mainly on the side facing the mainland, while the outer side feels rougher and more untouched.
Pašman is not a destination for a jam-packed itinerary or a lively holiday backdrop. Its appeal lies more in the short walks to the sea, the crystal-clear coves, the brief trips between villages, and the days that don’t need to be planned down to the last detail. If you want to experience Dalmatia at a more leisurely pace, you’ll find an island here that’s close to Zadar yet still pleasantly unhurried.
Coastal Life in Ždrelac
Ždrelac lies in the northwest of Pašman, right on the strait to the island of Ugljan. The bridge connects the two islands, making the village a convenient entry point if you’re arriving from the north. Still, Ždrelac doesn’t feel like a mere passthrough. Houses, small coves, and bathing spots line the coast, with plenty of room in between for quiet moments by the water.
The village is ideal for vacationers who like having everything within reach but don’t want to be in the middle of the hustle and bustle. You can head to the sea in the morning, drive toward Ugljan later, or simply stay in the area and take the day slowly. It’s precisely this easy mix of accessibility and island tranquility that makes Pašman Ždrelac so pleasant.
One of the well-known beaches is Matlovac. It lies in a sheltered cove and is perfect for a relaxed day at the beach. The water is clear, access is pleasant in many spots, and around the cove you’ll find plenty of room to spend a few hours by the sea.

Dobropoljana at the Foot of Bokolj
Dobropoljana lies further to the southeast and has an even more village-like feel. The village sits at the foot of Bokolj, the island’s highest peak, and opens onto the Pašman Channel. Boats are anchored in the small harbor, houses line the coast one after another, and the beach is directly integrated into the village.
The beach at Pašman Dobropoljana combines gravel and sand, with a seabed that is partly sandy. This makes it especially pleasant for families and anyone who likes to get into the water without walking far. At the same time, Dobropoljana remains fairly quiet and relaxed, even when the village comes to life in summer.
If you want a bit of activity in between, you can set off from Dobropoljana toward Bokolj. Even a short uphill walk changes the view of the island: below you the village and the channel, and beyond that the mainland and the Dalmatian coast.
Beaches and Coves on Pašman
Pašman doesn’t have huge beach promenades, but it does have numerous smaller bathing spots. Some are located right in the villages, others in coves or quieter stretches of coastline. This suits the island well, as a day at the beach here is usually quite simple: you lay out your towel, go for a swim, find a shady spot, and perhaps have a coffee in the village later.
In Ždrelac, Matlovac is one of the best-known beaches. Dobropoljana has its own village beach with gravel, sand, and shallower access. In the village of Pašman itself lies Jasenice – a natural cove ideal for a quiet retreat by the sea. Banj, Mrljane, Neviđane, and Tkon also have beaches or bathing spots suited to a relaxed day of vacation.
Depending on the stretch of beach, you’ll find pebbles, rocks, sand, or a sandy seabed. Water shoes are therefore recommended, especially in rocky areas. For smaller coves, you should bring water, sun protection, and perhaps something to eat, as restaurants or rental options aren’t always available directly on the beach.
Besides swimming, snorkeling, kayaking, stand-up paddling, and small boat trips are also possible. Pašman is not a place where you need a big program every day. Often it’s enough to simply explore different coves and let the day pass leisurely by the water.

Sights on Pašman
The most important sight on Pašman is the Benedictine monastery of Ćokovac, located above Tkon. Enthroned on a hill, it is one of the island’s most significant historical sites. Anyone interested in history, monasteries, or the Glagolitic tradition will find good reason here to set the beach bag aside for a few hours.
Another destination worth visiting is Bokolj. At around 270 meters, it is the island’s highest peak and more of a viewpoint than a major attraction. The climb is worthwhile mainly for the view: on a clear day, you can see across Pašman, Ugljan, the mainland, and the island world off Zadar.
The smaller paths between villages also have their own particular charm. Dry stone walls, olive groves, old stone houses, and short climbs characterize many stretches. Anyone who enjoys walking or cycling can explore Pašman effortlessly without much of a plan.
Tips for Getting There, Getting Around, and the Best Time to Visit
The main ferry connection runs from Biograd na Moru to Tkon. The crossing is short, making Pašman easy to reach even for longer stays. A second option is to travel via Zadar to Ugljan and from there cross the bridge at Ždrelac to Pašman.
A car is useful on the island, especially if you want to see various villages and beaches. For short distances, cycling or walking are also good options, especially outside the hot midday hours. July and August see the most activity on Pašman, but overall the island remains quieter than many well-known seaside resorts along the coast. June and September are often good months if you want to combine warm weather with a bit more peace and quiet.
During your stay, it’s worth not planning your day too tightly. Pašman Croatia stands out for its short distances, various bathing spots with clear water, and small changes of scenery. Those constantly looking for the next big item on the agenda can easily overlook what actually makes the island so charming.
